By: Brenda J. Barnes
Silas Watts and his family are lightning bugs who live in a lovely, safe neighborhood, that is, until Bennie the Bat moves in! Bennie is a bully and creates havoc in the once-calm glade. Silas is sure his highly electric light rays will be bright enough to drive the mean bat away. Bennie soon learns he will never win against a united front. To his dismay, when the lightning bugs unite, they create such intense light that the bully must retreat, defeated and shamed. But will Silas and his family be reunited after the battle has been won?

Brenda J. Barnes grew up in the mountain regions of Tennessee and Kentucky. Living close to that kind of beautiful, lush terrain instilled a lifelong love of gardening and nature in her. Brenda started writing creatively as a child, and her love of words continues decades later. She has achieved success as an author and an online poet, often writing in the Haiku style among others. In addition to penning a book about her childhood that will be released later this year, her first published children’s book, “Calvin Compost in Organic City,” was released in 2012. Look for more creative works from this author/poet.
Calvin Compost in Organic City is her first published children’s book. Brenda plans to continue The Adventures of Calvin Compost as a series of “books with a message” for children.
Silas Watts: The Highly Electric Lightning Bug, her latest book, addresses bullying, a particularly disturbing act in the classroom. Brenda hopes to teach children that bullying is not cool and that if they are being bullied by others, they must not suffer in silence but should enlist the aid of others, particularly their adult overseers.
